Ministry of Education says the BNTU has no lease or title to a parcel of land in Corozal

This evening, the Ministry of Education issued a lengthy statement in respect of a parcel of land in Corozal Town where it intends to build a pre-school. The land in question, according to the Belize National Teachers Union, has been with them for some time and they are prepared to fight to keep the land. A few days ago, signage was placed on the land indicating that the land has been secured for the purpose of a preschool by the Ministry. So the Corozal Branch of the B.N.T.U. kicked into full gear and has been mobilizing.  The Ministry says that the construction of the pre-school is part of its programme to expand access to early education through a loan with the Caribbean Development Bank. It says it did its due diligence to meet the requirements of the C.D.B. loan and that at a meeting with the B.N.T.U. a few days ago; it became clear that the union does not have lease or a title for the land but has been paying taxes to the Corozal Town Council and maintaining the land for years. The militant B.N.T.U., however, claims the land so we keep following this story to see how the impasse will be resolved.
