Regional writers to meet in Belize
Over fifty Central American writers will join their local counterparts next week in Belize City. The occasion is the ninth International Congress of Central American Literature scheduled to take place at the Princess Hotel from February twenty-eighth to March second. According to planning committee chairman Dr. Roy Young, the congress also affords scholars an opportunity to network.
Dr. Roy Young, Chairman, Planning Committee
“It’s going to be a full array of literature: poetry, short stories, books. We are pleased to have presenters from all over the world. We have from Germany, England, United States, and we have from all the Central American countries except El Salvador and Costa Rica. We even have southern Mexico.”
Ann-Marie Williams
“Zee Edgell has been named the special guest speaker, why Zee?”
Dr. Roy Young
“Zee is one of our prolific writers, and she has influenced our literature community, and so we are pleased to have her as a guest to the conference. She will be speaking at the opening and she will also be presenting her current work, which we are happy to have.”
Ann-Marie Williams
“Who is this conference designed for?”
Dr. Roy Young
“It’s designed for people at all levels. It’s designed for the person on the street, to the other extreme to the scholars where they will be presenting academic papers, which involved the critiques of works, of books, stories.”
A collection of Belizean literature will also be on display at the event. A twenty-five dollar registration fee is being charged, but tertiary level students can attend at no cost.
