Andrew Kelly is Resentenced; Less than 3 Years Left for Him to Serve for Murder Conviction
After spending half his life behind bars, Andrew Kelly will now only have to serve two years and ten months more before he is released. Kelly was behind bars on death row but won an appeal and was given a life sentence. With a change in law, all inmates serving life sentences must now be re-sentenced and given a definite sentence. During Kelly’s re-sentencing hearing, the court heard from two witnesses. One who is a friend of Kelly and visited him often, testified that Kelly is a changed man and would like to use the remainder of his life assisting young people to avoid the mistakes he has made. At the re-sentencing hearing, the Crown was represented by Senior Crown Counsel Shanice Lovell while Kelly was represented by attorney Anthony Sylvestre. In 1999 Kelly along with two other men, held up and robbed Chong’s grocery store located on Jasmine Street in Belize City. During the robbery, Kelly killed businessman forty-two-year-old Li Ron Chong.
