A Marine Casualty Investigation Underway in Wake of Fatal Boat Accident
A marine casualty investigation team is on the ground to determine what transpired in the fatal collision at sea. But even as that investigation is ongoing, Operations Officer at the Belize Coast Guard, Lieutenant Roque Canul says that there are concerns about risky practices by tour companies.
Lt. Roque Canul, Operations Officer, Belize Coast Guard
“Safe speed is of utmost importance. Visibility at night is very, very poor; the weather that is passing through the country, it makes the area very, very fogging. So I mean you must have a lookout while travelling and then if the visibility is poor, then by all means you need to slow down. We are talking about lives here. We just cannot afford to be speeding and disregarding the lives of the people that we have onboard. So it is very important. Wearing your life vests, using your safe speed, having your navigational lights, all those safety measures we need. It is important for the boaters, mariners out there to have these things in mind.”
