Bar Association elects new officers
The Bar Association of Belize held its annual general meeting last night and a new slate of officers was elected. Derek Courtenay is the new president, while Rodwell Williams, Michel Chebat and Edwin Flowers will serve as vice president, secretary and treasurer respectively. The vote is seen by observers as a referendum on the initiative taken by a number of attorneys to have Supreme Court Justice George Meerabux removed from the bench. It would appear that the anti-Meerabux forces at this point have the upper hand. Attorney Kirk Anderson, acting for Meerabux, has filed a constitutional motion in the Supreme Court asking that all proceedings in the Governor General’s inquiry be stopped. That motion is due to be heard by Chief Justice Abdulai Conteh on Tuesday.
