Cop Attackers Go before the Court
Today, four persons were arraigned in the Belmopan Magistrate Court for the New Year’s Day attack on Police Constable Edgar Teul. The foursome includes Guatemalan national Migdael Gonzalez, as well as Belizeans Irvin Cal, Magdaleno Cal and Abelino Cal. Magdaleno and Abelino were charged with Attempted Murder, while Migdael and Irvin are facing charges of Aggravated Assault. PC Teul was at a football match on the Maya Mopan football field when he was chopped as he attempted to break up a fight. He remains in an induced coma in the hospital. The violent attack was captured on video. Attorney Hurl Hamilton represents three of the men.
Hurl Hamilton, Attorney-at-law
“Magdaleno and Abelino have been charged with attempt murder and use of deadly means of harm. Irvin Cal has been charged with aggravated assault in relation to the incident that happened in Belmopan where a police officer was injured. I know that there is a video circulating on social media, albeit that some of the videos are cut short. Suffice to say that they are saying that they are innocent of whatever charges the police have proffered against them and suffice to say that they acted in self defence, those were my brief instructions.”

“Sir was there any sort of objection to bail and did you argue against those objections?”
Hurl Hamilton
“Well, the learned magistrate was unable to grant bail in relation to attempt murder. As it relates to the aggravated assault in terms of Irvin Cal, I would assume that the magistrate was of the view that perhaps all of these offences, alleged offences, occurred out of the same alleged set of facts. So, that is why I would assume that is the reason why the magistrate didn’t grant bail to all three of them.”
The men are scheduled to return to court on March twenty-sixth for the next hearing.
