PACT funds Victoria Peak improvements

Belizeans and tourists alike who visit the nation’s highest peak will soon see some improvements to the area. This is thanks to a fifty thousand dollar grant from the Protected Areas Conservation Trust, PACT, to the Belize Audubon Society. The money will be used to document the various species of plant and animal life in the area as well as the traditional use of the park by residents of the surrounding communities. Park rangers will also be equipped with radios and a riding mower for park maintenance as well as two inflatable boats to facilitate search and rescue. Victoria Peak, which stands at three thousand, six hundred and seventy-five feet above sea level, was declared a natural monument in 1989. It covers just under five thousand acres within the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. Some three thousand, five hundred visitors are attracted to the area annually.
