Woman alleges police brutality

Story Picture
A Belize City woman visited News 5 this afternoon to complain of two incidents of police brutality she allegedly suffered last week. Bernadine Anderson of a North Creek address said her nightmare started when police found her two sons near her gate and decided to search them.

I went outside and said, “What are you taking them for?”

He said, “You don’t worry about that.”

I told him “don’t talk to me in my face like that because you breath smells of liquor.”

He said, “What happen to you? F you.”

Well I said, “F you right back. If you can cuss me, I can cuss you.”

At the same time, the other two or three that were with him came up to me and said, “She’s going, she’s going, she assaulted the officer.”

I told them, “But you didn’t hear what they told me.”

He said, “We don’t want to hear that.”

And then …they want to fight me to put the handcuffs on my hand.

Now I’m already back in my yard, the two of them were on me, one of them beating me and fighting me to put the handcuffs on my hand. I ended up on the ground, with the handcuffs on, with scratches on my wrists, bruised, my lip got bussed and a lot of scratches on my hand. My hand is swollen, right now and I can’t even wear my watch.

Saturday morning, I was sleeping when I heard a knocking on my door. When I got up I saw that it was police officers…no I didn’t see that it was police officers, I said, “who is it?”

“Open the door, it’s police. We come arrest you.”

I said “for what? I didn’t do anything.”

“Open the door,” they said “or we’ll kick it in.”

They kicked the door in and about five of them male and one female. At that time, only my fourteen-year old daughter and I were at home.

They came in the room and said, “We came to arrest you because you assaulted an officer. You’re going good, or are you going with force?”

I said, “Well I’m not going because I didn’t do anything.”

One of them came and attacked me. He came and rushed to me.

I said, “I just want to get your name mi bredda.”

“Where were you this time?”

“In my bed, lying down on my bed.”

He said “me? I name F-ing Sosa.”

I said “good thank you.”

At the time I was saying this, he said, “we don’t want any long talking, you’re going.”

He rushed me and started choking me. Look at my neck, you can see the marks. He choked me and choked me and I was struggling with him and I just passed out in my bed.”

Anderson said police officials gave her medical forms both days for x-rays and treatment. She also appeared in Magistrate’s court this morning as she was summoned by the police to answer charges of resisting arrest, escape and using threatening words. She pleaded not guilty.
