Monetary grants for Belizean artists

Story Picture
If you’re a Belizean involved in visual, music or literary art here’s your chance to apply for money to improve your craft. The Interamerican development Bank in an effort to continue its ten-year cultural field promotion programme, is offering the grant. The programme funded by the World Culture Centre in Washington, D.C., has sponsored over ninety projects in the Caribbean and Latin America. IDB’s Representative in Belize, Hugo Souza, says it’s a good opportunity for Belizeans.

Hugo Souza, IDB Representative in Belize

“The idea of this programme is to promote excellence in the artistic areas like, music, painting, any cultural activity that is important to each country. So each year, now that the registration is open, we send to Washington some applications from cultural institutions in each country including Belize, who would like to receive some funding, up to twenty-thousand dollars Belize in order to promote their activities in different culture areas. In the past, we got three winners in Belize. Remember we are having a contest with twenty-six member countries in Latin American countries and the Caribbean. One winner was the Belize National Museum, another was the Ambergris Caye, the San Pedro Museum and last year the Toledo Maya Council won ten thousand dollars to promote the music within the Maya communities.”

Souza says that any proposal made must follow IDB’s guidelines. The deadline for applications is February sixteenth.
