Mayor Bernard Promises to Make Himself More Accessible to the Media

Bernard Wagner

Members from several media houses today attended a breakfast meeting hosted by the Belize City Council. The purpose of the gathering was for the council to restore relations with the media. Things went sour with the council after several requests from the media were ignored by the council’s public relations unit. The media showed its discontent by exiting the council’s media WhatsApp group, but that subtle act of protest also fell on deaf ears. Today, the media and the council ironed out issues and Wagner promised to be more committed with an expanded public relations team.

Bernard Wagner, Belize City Mayor

“From my end to you I promise to be more accessible to you all. Our P.R. team will try to communicate with you on a give basis. If you have request you get in touch with Erin. You get in touch with Michelle. You get in touch with Kory. You could even get in touch with myself. Sometimes you can send me a text and I am available if I have the time. Most of you have my cell number. I believe we have crossed this bridge. My council supports the media. My council, we have nothing to hide. We are a very transparent council and accountable to the people. We came in on the backs of the people. We are for the people. So how could we not be answerable to the people? How can we not be? I don’t like that narrative that people think that we are not accountable to the people. We are accountable to the every single Belizean in this country. I am accountable. My council is accountable.”
