Korea donates computers to mayors
The Republic of Korea has donated seventeen computers to the Government of Belize. The government is now passing them on to the nine municipal councils as part of its strategy to make the urban areas better managers of their affairs.
Wendel Parham, PS. Local Government
“The old record keeping systems, manual record systems need to be updated because of the modern techniques that that are being used in data analysis and in transferring information between the councils and central government. Also in proper financial management and for speedier access to evaluation rolls and other expense and revenue accounts we may wish to present to councils and central government.”
Anthony Chanona, Mayor, Belmopan
“Well we’ll put them to very good use. A lot of the computers we inherited from RECONDEV are very old and slow. As we prepare our database for garbage collection and to introduce for the first time in thirty years in Belmopan, a taxbase we will be using it to improve and store database, and I think we’ll have use for it right away.”
Wendel Parham
“It is a new approach to financial management we expect to see. With this system then these councils will be in a better position to do proper management and planning, also to develop the autonomy the central government is now affording to these councils, so as to manage their own affairs and to collect the revenues and to manage overall record keeping and financial systems.”
Parham says that the seventeen computers will supplement the forty computers already issued to the councils. The public should expect quicker service when making inquiries about municipal functions.
