Peyre Says He’s Not Replacing ‘Sista B’ in Queen Square

Michael Peyrefitte

On the issue of internal politics within the U.D.P., we asked the chairman, who lost to Phillip Willoughby two years ago at a convention in Port Loyola, if he will be replacing Denise ‘Sista B’ Barrow as standard bearer in Queen Square.  PM Barrow has announced his pending retirement from electoral politics and has named his sibling as his successor in that constituency.  It is widely believed, however, that ‘Sista B’ is merely a placeholder for another candidate to run in that division come November 2020.  While Peyrefitte scoffed at the notion of replacing ‘Sista B,’ he did say that the party, notwithstanding the whirlwind events of last week, is already rebounding from the embarrassing sequence of events.

Michael Peyrefitte, Chairman, United Democratic Party

“That’s out of whack.  Denise Barrow, Sista B, is no placeholder.  She is the duly selected, elected standard bearer for Queen Square.  That’s her division, in my opinion, and there is no plan or any sort of backdoor negotiation to have me go to Queen Square.  I have enough work as the chairman of the party, Minister of National Security and Attorney General.  So, to lay all the questions to rest, no, I am not going into Queen Square.”

Isani Cayetano

“Finally, where do we stand in respect of all of the happenings of last week?  Last week was a whirlwind for the United Democratic Party, where do you guys stand now in terms of either picking up the pieces, in terms of coming back together, reunifying and that sort of thing?”

Michael Peyrefitte

“Well, there are no pieces that fell, I mean it’s politics and political parties go through changes, you go through challenges from time to time.  We’ve been in government for twelve years, you know, it’s bound to happen that you have some situations where they become challenging at times.  It’s just politics, so we know that we went through a little phase there but we are already recovering and we’re moving on.  We’re a mass party and the party is certainly bigger than just a few people and we move on to the next general elections without batting an eye.  We have to select a new leader that will either be by consensus or another convention, we don’t know yet, we will know that in the coming week or weeks, but that’s what political parties do.  You take your licks, you gather yourself and you move on.”
