Santander Speaks on Employee’s Drowning

Last week Monday we told you about the twenty-seven-year-old Roy Grinage who drowned while he was swimming across the Belize River. Grinage, a resident of Saint Matthews Village, was returning from work with Santander and reportedly didn’t wait for the boat to ferry him across the river. Today, employer Santander commented on the tragedy and responded to the question about the need for a bridge.

“That was a very unfortunate incident because Roy didn’t wait for the boat to come back from the other side of the river because there is a boat twenty-four hours a day; double shift that takes people from one side to other. In our plans, we really don’t know what he was thinking but he jumped into the river and started to swim. It was very unfortunate because we are very sad as a family because we consider Santander family and we are very sad that this incident happened.”

“Is there anything in your plans to put a bridge?”

“We are proposing to the Minister of Works to build a bridge to cross over the Belize River to be able to go in a very close distance to the Cotton Tree bump. Right now, we go ahead and drive twenty-four miles into Roaring Creek and close to the road going to Valley Peace. But there is an opportunity, by building a bridge, to go and get out of the area through Cotton Tree and it is just a six-mile distance.”
