Darrell Bradley: System of Gov’t is Broken, Never Trust Politicians
Darrell Bradley recognizes that the current climate is rife with cynicism due to the corruption. Bradley says the system of government is broken and needs fixing because there are no checks and balances. His word of advice?
Darrell Bradley, Attorney-at-law
“The first thing I would say is never trust politicians. That is a thing that is a universal kind of principle. I remember that somebody told me a long time ago that people have a natural aversion to snakes and politicians. So don’t put your hope in any person. The thing that I really kinda say is important here is can people who recognize right, can people who recognize the moment in time that our country faces, can those people step forward and put forward things which would be very concrete and which would usher in change? For example, there is a significant amount of momentum I think in the country right now—both in Belize and with our diaspora community. There are lots of people lighting up social media, there is a lot of people talking right now about political personalities, what’s going on, the frustration with what’s going on. Can we, as a people, being mature, moved beyond that and say we need this in our society, we need reform in our society and can we put forward a series of legislation or practices or whatever that would bring reform because I think that if we could bring the leadership question in our country right, our country can go on to a trajectory of significant prosperity. The reality is that we are making the same mistakes over and over again because the sad reality is that our system of government is broken because our system of government does not have sufficient checks and balances to keep any political party in government at bay so that the will of the people are represented.”
