Census Based on Complex IT Infrastructure

A team from the Guyana Bureau of Statistics is currently in Belize observing the process, which will include mapping areas and real time information being updated into the system.  But in tracking how the country has developed and changed over time, Diana Castillo-Trejo says that they will be able to monitor and have field workers re-check information where necessary.

“Our entire census is basically based on a complex IT infrastructure. So we are not only conducting our data electronically by tablets, but the entire support system—everything from payroll to quality control, to supervisors monitoring the progress of the census—all of that is going to be done on an integrated IT infrastructure that our IT staff has been working at for a couple of years now. Once questionnaires are completed, that information feeds into everything from payroll, from mapping—as mapping is being updated, as households are being enumerated, our maps are being updated in real time as well. It feeds into our quality control so we are monitoring certain quality indicators in real time. So from day-to-day or from hour-to-hour, we can see where if there is any are where we think that there are data issues that we want to send the field staff back out there to deal with it because the indicators are not looking quite right. So all of that just feeds into each other and just feeds into the integrated IT system. And all of our IT applications was built in-house. Everything from our payroll system to our supervisor monitoring system, to our mapping application that we use to do our data collection for the mapping, GIS coordinates for the entire country.”
