Honduran vendor fined for being an illegal immigrant
Immigration Officers have been cracking down on illegal immigrants and a number of cases have recently come before the courts. In the most recent case a Honduran Vendor, who had permission to enter the country, was in the Magistrates Court for overstaying her welcome. Thirty-three year old Maria Ramos arrived in Belize on September twenty-ninth, 2008 and was given a permit allowing her only eight days in the country. But seven months later, Ramos is still in the jewel and today she pleaded guilty to the charge of Failure to Comply with the Conditions of her Visitor’s Permit. She was fined one thousand dollars to be forthwith and if she defaults on payment, she will serve six months in prison. And because Ramos is married and has a three year old daughter who needs surgery, she was not ordered to be deported… but her husband must produce documents to verify that the child needs medical attention. Ramos was picked up during a routine inspection at the Queen’s Square Market this morning.
