Police bullet kills man

In other crime news, police are investigating an incident in which a police officer shot and killed a man. On Tuesday seventy-seven year old Julio Leal went to the Corozal police station and reported that his son, forty-three year old Claudio Leal, was threatening to kill him. Because both men lived at the same address, a police and prison officer accompanied Julio home. Upon reaching the house, the police officer knocked on the door and told Claudio of the report made against him. He refused to come out. When Claudio finally emerged he was holding a metal shaft. According to the police press release, Claudio walked towards the officer wielding the shaft. The officer then took out his service revolver and fired a shot, hitting Claudio on the left ear. It is alleged that Claudio continued to advance towards the men, so the officer fired again, this time hitting him in the chest. Leal was transported to the Corozal Town Hospital and then to the Orange Walk Hospital where he underwent surgery and later died. A post mortem reveals the cause of death to be hypovolemic shock due to gunshot wounds to the chest and face. Police continue their investigations.
