5 Persons, Including Wilfred Elrington, Vying for Leadership of the U.D.P.

The United Democratic Party postponed its national leadership convention amidst the COVID-19 situation that has been plaguing the world.  The deadline for applications is set for March twenty-sixth and at the eleventh hour, two new applications were submitted. As you know, Patrick Faber and John Saldivar are back in the ring, along with Omar Figueroa.  Minister of Foreign Affairs and Pickstock Area Representative has now submitted his application for the post of party leader, even though he had said at the time of the first U.D.P. Convention in February that he wasn’t vying.  The former Belize City Mayor, Darrell Bradley will also be contesting the post.  Chairman of the U.D.P., Michael Peyrefitte confirmed this information, saying that the deadline for applications still is on Thursday.

Michael Peyrefitte, Chairman, U.D.P.

“Over the last twenty four hours two member of the National Assembly have expressed interest in the leadership of the U.D.P.  That is the President of the Senator, Honorable Darrell Bradley and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honorable Wilfred Elrington. They have both sent in their applications and they are the latest ones to do so.”

“So to date there are five applications?”

Michael Peyrefitte

“Five that I am aware of. Minister Saldivar, Minister Faber, Minister Figueroa, and now President Bradley and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington.”

Hipolito Novelo

“There are provisions in the party’s constitution to allow Mister Bradley to run?”

Michael Peyrefitte

“Well yes. Under the party’s constitution, anybody who is a member of the National Assembly can put in their names for leader of the party and of course the National Assembly which includes the House of Representatives and the Senate.”

“Is there a deadline for applications?”

Michael Peyrefitte

“Yes we had made a decision to put off the convention for April sixth, given our position for COVID-19. The deadline to apply was never put off. The deadline is tomorrow March twenty sixth so they are well within time to apply for leadership of the party.”
