Moses Sulph Says Total, 24hr Lockdown Should be Mandatory

Social activist Moses Sulph is weighing on the state of emergency and how it adversely affects the entire population of Belizeans who are living below the poverty line.  While there are strict rules to abide by, including a nightly curfew over a thirty-day period, Sulph, a member of Belize Leaders for Social Justice, strongly suggests that government should lockdown the entire country for the next four weeks.  The catch, however, is that an entire month’s worth of provisions should be made available to these families, notwithstanding existing programs such as BOOST and Pantry that government already has in place.

“We’re of the opinion or the suggestion, humbly, that there should be a total shutdown.  There should be a total shutdown whereby nothing is being done for twenty-four hours for four weeks.  But in order for this to happen in a positive way and have the outcome it’s supposed to have is that the government will need to pool together its resources and provide four weeks’ worth of groceries for all needy households who have no access to that amount of groceries that will serve them for that period of time.  What you will do in this, when you have a total shutdown, you will curtail the transmission,, you will stop the transmission, you will stop the spread, you understand, and it will only be limited to those who have already contracted the coronavirus and then the authorities can map out and identify the houses that are coronavirus infected and then we won’t have additional spread.  What informs that position?  The amount of people who have still not gotten anything, the amount of people who I meet on a daily basis who have to be out in the street trying to see how they can get that day, that one day supply of food just for that day.  And the BOOST Program, my brother, before this pandemic it has never been reaching most of the people who need it anyway.  There were thousands of people who were never benefiting from the BOOST Program.”
