New Miss Garifuna, Belize City crowned

Belize City has a new Miss Garifuna. Sixteen-year old Roslin Morris a fourth form business student of E.P. Yorke captured the crown on Saturday, October twenty-eighth from among five other contestants. She also walked away with Miss Amity and Miss Punctuality. The annual event, which seeks to keep the richness of the Garifuna culture alive has several categories of competition.

“The proper dancing of the Garifuna dances, which were the Hugu Hugu, Chumba, Punta, Paranda and Gunjai. I was also judged on my individual item, which was in the form of a speech done on single parenting. I was telling all the Garifuna women out there they should be independent in the case of losing their husbands.”

“What is special that you would like to take to the finals on Saturday, I know that the competition will be heavy, how prepared are you?”

“Well I know that I’m putting more effort in the preparation, to trying to do my best in representing Belize City on Saturday.”

First runner up was Tanya Ford, while Loana Ramirez placed second. Morris received over five thousand dollars in cash and prizes, among them a computer and printer, a return ticket to neighbouring Honduras to visit Garifuna villages and a diamond ring courtesy of JL’s. The National Garifuna finals takes place on Saturday, November fourth at Epworth Methodist School in Dangriga at seven p.m.
