Lord’s Bank slowly dries out
Floodwaters are slowly receding on the Hondo, Sibun, Belize and New Rivers, but it will be a while until levels return to normal, particularly with heavy rains predicted for the weekend. For some residents of the village of Lord’s Bank, however, it was good just to see dry land for the first time in over two weeks. Although most of the residents in this area have moved temporarily to stay with families on higher ground. Elswith Baizer decided to brave the flooded Belize River at home. Today, she feels like the worst has passed.
Elswith Baizer, Resident
“It was very difficult, for days we couldn’t come out. My daughter just had to bring and take stuff for us. Because we couldn’t get out without walking in the water that is for a long, long time since the hurricane.”
Baizer says the water rose about two and a half feet, covering her stairs, but now its only eight inches or so above the ground.
