Illegal Mexican Fishermen Detained in Belize!
Three Mexican fishermen have been arrested for illegal fishing in Belize. The Belize Coast Guard’s Maritime Law Enforcement Team busted the Mexican trio in the Bacalar Chico area around three-thirty this morning. The Coast Guard’s report says that the vessel tried to evade the patrol team and in the process, they dumped their products and gears overboard. The M-LET eventually caught the illegal fishers and detained them. The release says, “They were immediately issued P.P.E.’s and proper quarantine measures were initiated.” It is expected that they will face immigration and fisheries charges, as well as for violation of the current statutory instrument. When we spoke with DHS Doctor Marvin Manzanero this afternoon, he says that the ministry is involved to swab the men.
Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services
“We just found out that some Mexicans were caught off the island of San Pedro fishing, apparently Mexicans. So, the determination was made that they are going to be swabbed and taken to the quarantine area in Corozal since we already have people there. Wait out the time until they are released and then the police will take that up in their hands.”
We’ll have more on this story in our newscast on Friday.
