It’s National Teachers Day

Elena Smith

They teach and guide the children all year round. This year, COVID-19 is presenting unprecedented challenges, but the teachers continue to remain steadfast in moulding and inspiring the children.  It’s National Teacher’s Day and today is set aside to honour and show appreciation to teachers. Annually, across the country, the teachers would engage in activities away from the classrooms.  But due to the COVID-19 school is out and the teachers could not congregate to celebrate Teachers Day. According National President of the Belize National Teachers Union, Senator Elena Smith, they also weren’t even able to agree on a theme for the month of May.

Senator Elena Smith, National President, B.N.T.U.

“They were looking forward to enjoying a day with their staff somewhere where there is water so I guess today they might be doing so in their pools at home, unfortunately. Because of the pandemic, we were unable to have joint because normally the ministry and B.N.T.U. would meet and other stakeholders and then agree on a theme for the entire month of May because it is an education showcase. But we were unable to do so there wasn’t really a theme chosen for this celebration. But Doctor Babb had said that maybe they could go with the theme that was chosen for the youth innovation challenge because it deals with innovation and teachers have to be innovative right now in dealing with their students.”
