She is not a head of state, but visiting Taiwanese Vice President Annette Lu got the royal treatment as she arrived for a whirlwind 24-hour visit. News Five’s camera was on hand to document the visit, the first foreign mission by the recently elected Lu, who is the highest ranking Taiwanese official to visit Belize. The day began at the Philip Goldson International Airport as the Prime Minister and a large delegation awaited their special guest. From the airport the next stop was Belmopan where Vice President Lu was a special guest of Cabinet.

Prime Minister Said Musa

“As we welcome you to Belize we also wish to extend greetings to the government and the people of Belize and your government and the people of the Republic of China.”

“I wish to take this very auspicious opportunity to extend on behalf of his excellence the president and invitation to Prime Minister Musa to visit my country once again.”

While the Prime Minister traveled on to San Ignacio, Lu paid a visit to Central Farm, where Taiwan maintains an agricultural mission. Local journalists had to compete with a large and aggressive Taiwanese press corps.

The Prime Minister and Mrs. Musa rejoined the Vice President for a luncheon at the San Ignacio Hotel.

Prime Minister Said Musa

“And today I want to confirm that since that time our relationship has grown and has strengthened and I have every reason to believe that under the new government of the Republic of China, it will flourish to even greater heights.”

For her part, Lu thanked Belize for supporting Taiwan’s bid for UN membership and urged Belize and other friends of Taiwan to resist the intimidation and pressure applied by mainland China. She also asked those Taiwanese citizens living in Belize to work with Belizeans to insure a secure and prosperous future.

The tour continued with a visit to Cahal Pech Maya Site before returning to Belize City, where a reception will be held tonight at the Radisson Fort George. Following the reception Prime Minister Musa and Vice President Lu will host a joint press conference.
