Yabra wins in BFL opener

Story Picture
Good evening I’m James Adderly and you’re locked into this fresh dish of Sports Monday. The Regent Millennium Football Cup Tournament regular season got underway this weekend with six matches staged nationwide.

We caught up with the MCC opener between Kulture Yabra and Caye Caulker Turquoise. And if you weren’t in your seat 8 minutes after the starting whistle, you would have missed this sensational auto goal that gives Yabra a 1-zip lead. And yes, the scorer does get some consolation from his teammates because life must go on.

Just 5 minutes later, the new Yabra player Elvier Espejo shows off his stuff with this individual run that gives Yabra a 2-nil lead. Yabra looks for more, when Donnie Tun centres. But this time the Turquoise defense holds firm.

For sure the city team is in control of the action and should have scored here, but Nunez takes too long to dish and the play is broken up. However, Caye Caulker comes back with this feed to Flowers and his left foot shot cuts the 2-zip lead in half.

At the other end, Norman Nunez gets another go at goal, but the Turquoise keeper comes up with the stop. Still folks, the timing goal for Caye Caulker almost comes off this slight floater, but the ball inches outside the sticks.

Meanwhile, Tilliman Nunez shows off his set shot ability, but this spotkick crashes against the crossbar. And at the half Yabra boasts the 2-1 lead.

In the second half, this centre from off the right wing finds McCauley who keeps it alive, the shot from off the left side rebounds off the keeper and David “Manu” McCauley makes it a 3-1 Yabra lead.

On this press, Marcelino Tun of Yabra looks to increase the lead when he gets taken down from behind, but the play is overlooked by the referee. The penalty call does come when Tilliman Nunez is shoved to the ground inside the 18. Vallan Symms steps up for the conversion but missed the target as Yabra goes on to settle for the 3-1 big W.

In other results from over the weekend, Sagitun and Bandits Hardware struggle to a scoreless draw Saturday night at Independence. Down in Dangriga, Griga Tropical beat Lagio Jumex 1-zip. Jube took out Metro Stars 4-1 at the Norman Broaster Stadium. Acros and Juventus battled to a 2-2 draw at O.W., while San Pedro Dolphins and Real Verdes settled for a 1-1 finish.

Meanwhile folks, in closing we salute Marion Jones for embracing the Belizean flag after winning the gold in the 100 metres at the Sydney Olympics. Thanks Marion and we hope you win the 5 golds you seek.
