Bus Operators Aren’t Breaking Even
As it stands, the state of the bus industry will get worst in the weeks ahead before it gets any better. In the summer months passengers commute less than they would during other times of the year. Increasing bus runs will not necessarily improve the situation going forward.
Ewart Metzgen, Secretary, Belize Bus Association
“As we come to July and to the summer, the industry won’t get better unless the economy of this country starts balancing off and picking up, the transportation industry will be where it is for now. We can’t go back and we can’t increase the amount of buses we have on the road. As it is right now, the buses that we are running, I can’t even say the operators are breaking even. You are just covering cost, buying fuel, paying your driver and conductor and that’s about it. You’re not even left with anything to say take to the bank to try and save anything. A lot of us are out there taking a deep breath that you go out everyday and you get back home and noh bust wahn tire because when you look pan di cost ah wahn tire you noh even di mek di money fi buy back wahn tire right now.”
