ComPol on Extension of S.O.E.

Chester Williams

On the topic of the state of emergency, an online site conducted an interview with Commissioner of Police Chester Williams last week where he is quoted as saying; “I would wish to see the S.O.E. in place for the rest of the year because at least until then we will be affected by the effects of COVID-19.” Today, ComPol Williams was asked about this statement, but he says his words were taken out of context. He explains what he meant on the possibility of an extension of the S.O.E.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“That was taken out of context. I was speaking should there be a second wave. I, personally, I understand people’s concern. I understand the position the government is in, in terms of the economy. I understand the strain that this is putting on the police and the security forces to enforce. So, if it is that the government should decide to lift the curfew or the S.O.E. at any point in time, I have no issue with it because I do understand. People, for the most, have lost their jobs and the longer they stay unemployed the greater the potential for them to may want to do things to feed their families. The economy must get the chance to rebuild. So, I have no issue if the S.O.E. should be lifted but as I said before that is a matter for the government to decide.”
