Teachers Will Decide if They Feel Comfortable Returning to the Classrooms
According to Elena Smith, given the present conditions and unanswered questions, the decision to return to the classroom will be left for the individual teacher. Smith says that teachers should request from their school’s administration what is being done to keep them and students safe.
Senator Elena Smith, National President, B.N.T.U
“From our view point we believe that our teachers should not put themselves in a position of being unsafe. The S.I. is one thing; acting illegally is one thing but the safety of our teachers is another thing. You can’t expect to ask me to come to school when I have not seen where safety things have been put in place for us; myself and my students. So as a responsible union who has a legal obligation to look out for the wellbeing of our teachers we must advice them if they are not comfortable, if they don’t feel safe then they must make that decision as to what they will do and how they will hold their management accountable.”
