Illegal logging near Honey Camp Lagoon
There is information tonight that the Orange Walk Forest office on Liberty Avenue today seized logs from two trucks believed to have been illegally felled from a protected area near the Honey Camp Lagoon. If the information reaching our news centre is accurate, then there is cause for concern because we understand that four persons close to a high-ranking government Minister received logging concessions only a month ago to conduct operations in the fifty-five thousand acre protected area. The reports say that the entire area was parceled off, and three of the four persons got over fifteen thousand acres each, while the fourth was given a lease for the remaining ten thousand acres in the reserve. That is bad enough but the ongoing logging caused the Forestry Department to move in because the logs are immature. More on this tomorrow.
