Son saves father’s life

Story Picture
Around three o’clock this afternoon, News Five got a call informing us that William Young, a well known furniture maker on Cemetery Road, had just been stabbed. Our crew immediately rushed to the scene, and what we found was not pretty.

Jacqueline Woods, Reporting

When News Five arrived on the scene there was broken glass and lots of blood splattered on the floor and over the furniture inside the house of fifty-four year old William Young. The well-known furniture maker was stabbed several times after a young lady and man entered the building supposedly to rob him. According to residents of the area they heard Young scream out, but for some reason no one bothered to find out what the problem. Someone, however, called Young’s son, Earl who came rushing home just in time to save his dad’s life.

Earl Young, Son

“I get the call saying that a guy is upstairs of my old man’s house beating him, but we no know for what, so we just rushed over.”

Earl, who was accompanied by two friends, says because the door was locked he had to push his hands through the opening of the broken glass window to get inside. That’s when he saw the man, who had tightened a plastic tie wrap around his dad’s neck, leaning over him with a butcher knife in his hand.

Earl Young

“And I meet him on top of my old man with the knife. So what I did, was hit him two times in his mouth then he conscious that it was somebody just as young as he was, because I father is fifty four years old. He came out running with the knife in his hand, Mr. Lashley was accompanying me, was upstairs and when he ran out, he fired a stab at him. He missed him and he slipped and he ran downstairs. So I picked up a stool and I ran behind him to whop the guy.”

But just as the man identified as James Bennett tried to make good his escape, the police arrived.

“At the same time a policeman came with his gun and told him to drop the knife. He told him about three times. Then he just dropped it and they just handcuffed him. Afterwards we took our old man to the hospital.”

“Where was your father stabbed?”

Earl Young

“I see a cut in his head, one in this corner here also a couple cut son on his hands.”

Jacqueline Woods

“Was he conscious when he left?”

Earl Young

“Yes. Walking by himself, but he lost a lot of blood.”

Inside the house police also found a woman Indira Arnold, who is believed to be Bennett’s girlfriend. A witness told News Five that the couple, who live just a stone’s throw away from Young’s residence apparently left their two-month old baby in their house before making their way across the street. Bennett and Arnold allegedly entered the house after the woman knocked on the door and asked Young for water.

Arnold and Bennett were promptly taken into custody. No charges as yet have been levied against the couple. Police say at this time they do not have a motive for the stabbing and are continuing their investigation. Young received treatment at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for multiple stab wounds to the upper and lower body and has since been released.
