Orange Walk wins football match

Story Picture
Good evening I’m James Adderly and it’s my pleasure to welcome you to another portion of Sports Monday. The BNFA’s National First Division Football two game playoff series got underway yesterday at the People’s Stadium with Lagio Jumex hosting Metro Stars of Belize City. The Stars got into the playoffs through the unconventional route of a successful protest against Yabra of Belize City, a team that did not lose a ballgame in the entire duration of this national tournament. Nevertheless, in two ballgames against the Yabra team, the Metro Stars did not win on the field of play, but here they are being inspected by referee Virgilio Ruiz before prime time against Orange Walk yesterday.

The home field advantage helps Lagio Jumex to the fast start and they should have been on the scoreboard twenty minutes in, only Guadalupe Trequeno misses the target from point blank range.

Meanwhile, this call by referee Ruiz leaves us puzzled, but watch the Stars goalkeeper come out of the eighteen to make this stop. For sure it’s deserving of a yellow card – but a red card is way too much. Nevertheless, the keeper must leave, and he eventually does to the heartbreak of the Metro Stars, who turn to Willie Robinson for help at goal.

Lagio immediately takes advantage of the numerical imbalance, but the shot from the right side inches outside the sticks. It’s O.W. pressing the action when Leo Westby thinks he has opened the scoreboard, only to be informed that he was in an offside position. This time downfield Westby goes to the header, but fails to find the target and at the half we have a scoreless ballgame.

Out of intermission Metro Stars come out firing, but this launch by number thirteen does not get the job done. The Jumex reply comes from Westby, but his wicked shot bounces off the far upright affording the Stars defense an opportunity to clear. Now watch Landi Vega set table for number thirteen, only the shot is right at the O.W. keeper, who makes the save.

So Lagio Jumex go to their goleador Westby, who goes to the left foot, but today is not his day. Whose day was it? Well watch Guadalupe Trequeno smash this one between Robinson and the sticks to give O.W. a 1-zip lead.

Of course by this time the frustration had become apparent on the Metro Stars and player/owner Albert Hoare is in no mood for foolishness at this point. The Stars demise become cemented when this outside shot hits the body of Albert Hoare. Willie Robinson can only hang his head helplessly as O.W.’s Lagio Jumex takes game one with a 2-zip W. Game two comes to the MCC Grounds this Sunday August twenty-seventh and Metro Stars must win by a goal margin to pick up the championship.

Also coming up this weekend is the Tour de Santino, a three-day cycling event, which begins on August twenty-fifth, and of course you will want to keep track of that. The elite in cycling from this jewel will be in performance. Also coming up on the twenty-fifth of August is the opening of the Semi-pro Basketball League, a four-team event. We want to tell you that in a pre-season game over the weekend, the defending champs Raiders were beaten by thirty points by the Orange Walk team. I guess there might by parity in the league after all.
