A Learning Recovery Month for Students

The 2019/2020 school year officially closes on June thirtieth after three months that schools physically closed at the start of the lockdown. But CSEC preparations have been ongoing for the past two weeks for fourth form students across the country to prepare them for the exams. Earlier this month, the Ministry of Education announced that the school year will begin weeks earlier, on August tenth and students would move on to the next grade. Chief Education Officer Doctor, Doctor Carol Babb says that the first month of the new school year will be used to assess students and determine the extent of the learning gap occasioned by the closures.

“Schools have been closed for too long and the learning gap has widened. So the Ministry of Education, under the directorship of Minister Patrick Faber, we have decided that schools will be reopened for all schools at all levels on the tenth of August. We are calling that month learning recovery. It will be a month where the students will be given an assessment to determine where they are and what the needs are. And the ministry with our team will provide training for the teachers to ensure that they know how to fill that gap, how to provide interventions to ensure that our students are getting the best quality education and so that we bring them back on track after being out for so long.”
