Honduras entertains at Costa Maya

Story Picture
Tuesday and Wednesday belonged to El Salvador and Guatemala. In the Thursday night edition of San Pedro’s Costa Maya Festival, Honduras showcased an indigenous dance group and a concert by six talented young ladies. News Five’s Jose Sanchez was there to soak up the culture.

Cuadro Nacional Dance group provided cultural entertainment that mirrored the heritage of the Mundo Mayan countries. The strong presence of village life was the focal point of the dances. The women’s clothing, colorfully knitted with Mayan design, swung in the wind as they danced across the floor. The men, armed with machetes, hats and smiles, did their best to seek the affections of the women.

For something a little different we decided to quiz the spectators on the grounds about the names of the different Costa Maya countries.

Spectator #1

“I think I can remember some, Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, I think. I don’t remember.”

Jose Sanchez

“You go to Chetumal?”

Spectator #1

” Yes.”

Jose Sanchez

“What country is Chetumal in?”

Spectator #1

“Mexico..”

Jose Sanchez

“Since you are hiding behind your beer. I have a question for you. What are the five countries involved in the Costa Maya Festival?”

Spectator #2

“Dominican Republic.”

Spectator #3

“Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Salvador and Mexico.”

Spectator #4

“The five countries involved in this Costa Maya festival are El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Belize, and…One more I can’t recall at this point in time.”

Jose Sanchez

“I’ll give you a hint. The country that you can’t remember is hosting tonight’s show.”

Spectator #4

“Honduras.”

Well, I guess not everyone is good at quizzes. But by this time, the show grounds were getting quite crowded and the reason was that Chicas Roland, a six member singing group was preparing to go on stage. As it turns out, San Pedranos are big fans of these ladies.

Gach Guerrero, Manager, Costa Maya Festival

“We usually get to see them here on the Spanish channels like Univision. Whenever they have a Latin concert you’ll see the Chicas Roland in there.”

“We like here, because I like the people here. I like you, I like here, and I like everybody.”

Well, they certainly were fond of everyone, but the crowd seemed to like them a lot too. After a while a couple of kids started to try out their dance moves. Some of the bigger kids got into the music and had their own party in front of the stage. It was only a matter of time till they got on the stage and showed the girls that they could shake to the music too. I bet you never thought guys could dance with a chair like that. The night was a treat for the fans of Chicas Roland. Everyone went away happy, believing Honduras Night was worth the price of admission.

Spectator #5

“Tonight was best and I think the cultural dances were good too.”

Spectator # 6

“It was okay. It was good. The audience could have been a bit more into it. The applause wasn’t all that, but the show was good.”

Reporting for News Five, I am Jose Sanchez.

Tonight is Mexico night at the Costa Maya Festival. It will feature a mariachi band and dance group from Cancun. The party peaks on Saturday with the gala Belize night.
