Cultural Heritage gears up for carnival

Story Picture
This Sunday, the BTL Park will be jamming as one of the biggest carnival groups, Cultural Heritage, will be hosting their annual Carnival Rampage. Each year the band holds the event to highlight the costumes that will be worn in the road march. Jacqueline Burgess, the band’s publicity director, says this year a lot of planning went into their presentation and the public should expect to see more colourful and elaborate costumes.

Jacqueline Burgess, Publicity Director, Cultural Heritage

“Carnival Rampage occurs every year, letting the public know what we are going to do, because many times a lot of the bands just depict something that people can’t relate to. So this is our opportunity to let the public know what we are going to do for this year and get a peek of the costumes at the same time.”

“What are we gong to see, come Sunday?”

Jacqueline Burgess

“Well you are going to see a lot of colour like I promised the last time. Cultural Heritage is probably missing a lot of colour. A lot of more beads, a lot more feathers, you know making the costumes look a lot like Trinidad, Guyana and Barbados, so we are getting there.”

Jacqueline Woods

“I know one complaint people make around carnival time is that every year the costumes remain the same. It is the same thing over and over, but are you saying that this year we should expect to see something far more elaborate?”

Jacqueline Burgess

“Definitely for two reason: we use to have Carolyn Trench Sandiford as our designer, Carolyn unfortunately has taken a backseat in all of this and her assistant David Matus is now our new designer. David has traveled to Trinidad this past year and has learned new techniques to let the costumes become more alive, more creative. So we are putting his techniques and his experiences from going abroad to use this year and making sure that the colours blend, there is neatness, durability and that sort of thing.”

Burgess, who did not want to reveal the band’s theme, says their presentation will be very Belizean, highlighting our culture through carnival. Carnival Rampage gets underway Sunday at the BTL park from eleven in the morning till eight in the night.
