Private Sector Senator Says G.O.B. Has No Plan for Economic Recovery
According to Private Sector Senator Mark Lizarraga, the government has no solid plan for economic recovery and the right thing to do is to call elections now to give way for a new administration to put in place a viable plan. Lizarraga says this government does not have the best track record in guarding public resources. The senator pointed out that the bottom line is that government has been spending more and earning less and has done nothing to prepare the country for the external shocks of the COVID-19.
Mark Lizarraga, Senator for Private Sector
“I want some clarity from the government side if it is going to be for bolstering the economic and social recovery. If it is, then I want to hear is it going to be only for salaries or is there something in the future for business, to save businesses. Is there something in the future beyond the fifty dollars and the seventy five dollars cause people can’t live off of that; that dah just fi hold them on—yes a drop in the bucket–it’s a help. We need constant reminders of why it is that we are borrowing, what it is that we are spending on and how this is going to bring us through this in a sustainable ways. That has to be the key now because we don’t have unlimited credit, we don’t have unlimited space, we don’t have unlimited money. And our vision can’t be just between now and the next election and then God help the next leader. And my heart bleeds for the Belizean people. Sorry for the Belizean people. No that can’t be, I am sorry. And I have said it publicly and I am going to say it in this honorable house; if that is your plan, then call the elections now. And that’s not political; that is strategic because we need to have a viable plan in this country.”
