Sagitun routes Chetumal in football
Good evening I’m James Adderly and this just happens to be another serving of Sports Monday. Fresh off their success at the Central American Volleyball Championships at El Salvador the volleyball council got back to business as usual Saturday night at the City Centre. We caught up with the male division clash between Acros Scorpions and AMS Jaguars.
We pick up the action with the Jaguars serving to hold on in the first set, but watch Ricky Arnold dig out this wicked smash from Germaine Audinett as Scorpions take the first set 25-16. In the second set Audinett shows Basil Matthews his defensive skills that bring his team a point. It’s tougher defense from Zuniga and Audinett as Jaguars pull up 25-21 to grab the second set and tie the series at one apiece.
Set three proved to be the pivotal confrontation of the match up. Germaine Audinett smokes this one through the Scorpions defense. Of course the Scorpions also have their power puncher in the person of Basil Matthews and he lets the Jaguars feel the sting right here.
Meanwhile, with the score at 25-24 Jaguars could close out the show, but Ian Galvez gives the serve away. At 28-27 Scorpions get their turn to put it away, but Joshua Usher ties the score for the Jaguars.
It’s 31-30 when Derrick Young hammers this smash through to give Scorpions the big W for a 2-1 lead in the series. They would go on to take the win overall, taking the fourth set 25-22.
Turning to the football scene, the semi-pro champions Sagitun of Independence came to the MCC Grounds for an exhibition match yesterday against an all star selection from Chetumal. Make that a so called all star selection, they certainly weren’t very stellar.
Twenty-three minutes into the action Berys Benavides single-handedly beats the Chetumal defense and embarrasses the keeper with a wicked curve as Sagitun takes a 1-zip lead.
Meanwhile, we’re not sure if this appearance by Tilliman Nunez in a Sagitun uniform is a guest appearance, but he nonetheless displays his star power, skillfully maneuvering past the Mexican defense to make it 2-nil.
Three minutes later in second half play, the Brazilian import Marco Soto becomes the beneficiary of a rebound off the keeper and moves in to make it a 3-zip Sagitun lead and yes he does know how to celebrate. Three minutes later, the other Brazilian import Moises Hernandez sets table perfectly for Tilliman Nunez and just like that, its 4-zip.
This time downfield, its Tilliman, who deals to the Brazilian Hernandez, who makes the score 5-nil. A minute later Tilliman again slaloms through the Mexican defense for the hat trick and the 6-zip final score and yes most city fans didn’t think that show was worth ten dollars at the gate. It was like little boys against big men. Anyway, the semi-pro football season is set to kick off on September thirteenth with an all day marathon and that certainly will bring quality football to the MCC Grounds.
