City summer camp opens for 10th year
“Gu Back Da School” is the theme for the year 2000 edition of Curlin King Children’s Athletic Programme. The camp, which is held at the Rogers Stadium, runs from August seventh to September first and is open to children between the ages of six and sixteen. Coordinator Curlin King, says the children, who come mostly from disadvantaged homes, are the ones who have inspired him to keep the camp running every year for the last decade. Today, King is asking the business community to support the project that has benefited hundreds of Belizean children and encouraged them to stay in school.
Curlin King, Coordinator, Sports Programme
“When we do the training at Rogers Stadium, these kids come out each day and they train hard. The reward we give to these kids are basically encouragement to stay in school. To let them know that you cannot be a good athlete if you are not in school. You cannot perform to the best of your ability if you do not stay in school and if you want to discuss a business deal you have to have a good sound education to do that. At least you have something to fall back on and that is the purpose for these kids to stay in school. So supporting this programme is very essential to these children that we could inspire them to go on and stay in school because there are a lot of kids who are not going to school, they have dropped out of school and then they are on the streets and they get caught up with temptations and we don’t want this to happen to the majority of our Belizean kids.”
King says because the camp is a back to school activity, they are asking the business community to donate school supplies. The programme starts Monday and runs from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on weekdays. Registration is free so if you are interested in having your child attend, all you need to do is show up at the Rogers Stadium with your son or daughter.
