Wounded inmate did not fire gun
Whether it was an honest mistake or a deliberate act of obfuscation,
we cannot be sure, but police today have given a significantly different
version of what transpired Monday at Hattieville Prison. Contrary to what
we and other news media were told yesterday afternoon by prison authorities,
it now appears that inmate Eugene Martinez did not fire a shot at a prison
warder. A police release says that Martinez was found in his cell in possession
of a homemade single shot shotgun. Two prison officers tried to take it
from him, when a struggle ensued. It was when Martinez attempted to load
the gun that he was shot in the stomach by the prison warder. Martinez
remains at the KHMH recovering from his wounds. Executive Governor of
Prisons Bernard Adolphus told News Five that the erroneous report by prison
spokesman Marisa Quan may have been caused by early confusion, which immediately
followed the shooting.
