Squatters Issued with Enforcement Notice
Enforcement notices have been issued to squatters in what is known as the “gungulung area” of Belize City. The area near Chetumal Boulevard is a hotspot for squatters and a known site designated for government projects. Squatters have been removed from the area before and authorities are looking to remove another group; that is, if they don’t leave on their own free will. Lands Commissioner Wilbert Vallejos says that every time there is a government project, the department has to deal with squatters.
Wilbert Vallejos, Commissioner of Lands and Surveys
“I think the recent eviction, it is not an eviction it is an enforcement notice we issued to some squatters in what we called the Chetumal Street Extension, the boulevard. If you recall that is an area that has been set aside for government projects. In fact this would not be the first time that the government is dealing with squatters in that area and every time there is a project of proposal for government to build something they have to deal with squatters because the area is already designed to house government projects. So that is the most recent enforcement notice that we have issued to squatters.”

“How many persons in the area are we talking about?”
Wilbert Vallejos
“How many persons? I am not sure. I would be lying to you if I tell you I am sure. I know there are several parcels big parcels that are set aside for government projects.”
