P.U.P. Senators Criticize Brads’ Multimillion Dollars Contract
The government, via the Lotteries Tender Panel, awarded Brads Gaming Group Limited a license to continue to administer the lottery for an additional ten years. The People’s United Party has criticized the decision, saying that, “Brad’s management of the Boledo/Lottery enterprise in past years has been the subject of widespread criticism along with allegations of kickbacks to political functionaries.” The P.U.P. says that to renew such a lucrative and one-sided contract for Brads, worth conservatively four hundred million dollars over ten years, is cause for real concern. Senators were not allowed to debate the contract due to the standing orders, but P.U.P. Senators Michael Chebat and Doctor Louis Zabaneh managed to criticize the government for awarding a multimillion-dollar contract while the poor and vulnerable continue to suffer.
Michel Chebat, Lead P.U.P. Senator
“We continue to borrow and to borrow and to borrow without end. You see Mister President we are borrowing on the one hand limitless. It seems that that the barrowing barrel has no end, has no bottom but on the other hand Mister President with one stroke of the pen we had just given away what is estimated to be a forty million dollars a year contract to Brads Gaming Group. So we borrow and we give away Mister President. Where is the priority?”
Dr. Louis Zabaneh, P.U.P. Senator
“I am very sad that the senate rules do not allow us to debate the Brads contract because that is a travesty. Over three hundred million dollars that has been given away just like that when we are talking right now about the need to borrow millions and millions of dollars and we can’t debate the Brads gaming contract because it is under a section called papers and we are not permitted to speak about the Government of Belize lottery exclusive license. So many things are wrong with that when our people are literally starving.”
