General Elections Before November? Not Likely

Back to the PM’s press conference, the last general elections were held in November 2015, and all indications so far are that the anticipated elections vote will not take place before November of this year.  That’s because, according to PM Barrow, government is very much occupied with its COVID response which includes charting the way forward for economic recovery.  While an early election is possible, PM Barrow says that it is less than likely.

“There is the normal requirement, although I think that there can be an extension, but the normal requirement is that elections go not more than five years from the date of the last general elections.  I don’t remember the date of the last general elections, it was November third or fourth or something like that in 2015, so as things now stand, the elections will be by the end of the first week in November of this year.  That should be a secret, cannot be a secret.  You are asking whether there would actually be before the end of the first week of November.  Possibly, but I don’t think so.  To be completely honest with you, I don’t think so because of the various things that we are doing.”

Now, the U.D.P. still has to contend with the Pickstock Division where Wilfred Sedi Elrington is retiring and there is still no indication what will happen in the south where Frank Papa Mena is coming under further fire from constituents who want a convention and not an endorsement in Dangriga.
