Business telephone book published

Story Picture
If you’ve ever tried looking up a number for a business place, organization or institution, only to give up frustrated, then you’ll be interested to know that those numbers are now right at your finger tips. There’s a new book out and although it’s not exactly a phone book, it does have a total listing of business services in Belize. If it sounds too good to be true, this next story will make you a believer.

Jacqueline Woods, Reporting

It is similar to your telephone directory, but the numbers that are available are those of business places and service organizations that can be found in Belize. The Trade Directory of Belize is a first of its kind local publication. The book, which was released on Monday June 19th, was published by the Millennium 2000 Company and it has already gotten the thumbs up from Government and the business community.

Ricardo Aguilar, Project Coordinator, Millennium 2000

“The product that came out is fantastic, everybody likes it. It serves as a medium for almost everybody to get some sort of information. A student can use it, a business person, a tourist, almost anybody. The information in there is tremendous.”

Jacqueline Woods

“How comprehensive is the publication?”

Ricardo Aguilar

“Well, we did a lot of research and we have almost every sector of the private sector included. That is how comprehensive it is.”

In the white pages you can find a complete listing of Belize Business Services, while a look through the green pages gives you the number for government services, educational institutions and non-governmental organizations. If you would like a more detailed description of services listed in the directory, that information can be found in the yellow pages. Ricardo Aguilar, the project coordinator of Millennium 2000 says The Trade Directory of Belize, is just the beginning as all this information will soon be available on CD ROM.

Ricardo Aguilar

“With that programme, a businessman can take a CD ROM insert it in his computer, a businessman, student anybody and they can just look upany aspect of the Trade Directory electronically. So they can go, let’s say they want to find a business, they can just go to the category type it in, and the names come up. And it’s very simple to use because anytime you do something complicated, it is not as good as something simple. The simpler something is, the better something is. So that is what we work towards, the simplicity of something and that is art…the directory is a work of art.”

That work of art is evident in a colorful layout of a number of Belize’s travel attractions. There is also historical information that is given through a pictorial guide that highlights Belize over the centuries. The Directory pays tribute to Leader Emeritus George Cadle Price, the first prime minister of Belize and the Father of Independence. The company also pays tribute to some international icons like the late Princess Diana of Wales, United States President, Bill Clinton and the late Mother Theresa.

Aguilar says without the invaluable help of the government printery, the directory would not have been possible.

Ricardo Aguilar

“I must not forget the people at government printery, the ones who put this book together, they printed it from start to finish. They did all the filling, the plates, they did the collation and I have been in different departments, but all I can say, is that I have the highest regard for the people at the government printery, for their professionalism and their enthusiasm in getting this book done. When they realized that this was something to showcase Belize, they got together and did a very good job.”

If you would like a copy of the Trade Directory of Belize you can pick up a publication, free of cost, from the office of Millennium 2000 at #5 Adams Lane in Belize City or you can give them a call at 70636.
