Belize Girl Guides get organized
They are not as highly publicized as the Belize Scouts Association but our ladies in blue, the Girl Guides Association of Belize, have been busy getting reorganized. The association is currently focusing on strengthening its leadership skills countrywide.
Sister Elsa Oliva, Chief Commissioner, Girl Guides Assoc.
“The movement is strong from the point of view that it is countrywide. Our companies and our packs are a bit dormant, they are not as active as they should be, but we are hoping that we are going to revive them and that we are going to be as strong as we were a few years ago. However, let me say that we are recruiting leaders because we find that that is our problem. Our problem is leaders, we don’t have enough young leaders, so with that, we hope that during the summer, with the activities that will be going on, we will have a new revival of the Girl Guides Association.”
“At the moment we are very excited because we have 4 young ladies who belong to the Troupe 782 of Colorado, and they are called Girl Scouts, but that doesn’t mean that they belong to the Scout Association. In America, they call them Scouts, here in Belize we call them Guides. They came through a tour agency, and are visiting the country to learn about Belize and at the same time, they want to communicate and associate themselves with the Girl Guides of Belize.”
This morning two Belizean Girl Guides left the country en route to Trinidad. The young women will participate in a leadership workshop for Girl Guides of the Caribbean. The Guides are expected back home on June 28th. Meanwhile parents and guardians are being asked to encourage their children to take part in the summer camps and trips that will be hosted by the Girl Guides Association over the school holidays.
