BTL offers new roaming internet service

Story Picture
Today, Belize Telecommunications Limited expanded its internet services by introducing Internet Roaming. The new service will allow customers to access their BTL account while traveling abroad. It was made possible after BTL signed an alliance with iPass, one of the largest internet roaming providers.

Gaylene Dawson, Marketing Representative, BTL

“Maybe in the past locally, businesses haven’t been able to access their internet abroad using their BTL account now they are able to use that in the 5,000 access points that we have in the 150 countries. They will be able to use the same login name as they use here locally, receive and send email and stay in touch with their businesses without having to pay a long distance charge.”

Dionne Chamberlain, Public Relations Manager, BTL

“Well over the past couple of years, BTL has been trying to enhance the services it currently offers by giving value added services. We try to form alliances with other companies so that we can provide technology that we cannot provide on our own. One that we did last month was the roaming into Mexico with our cellular service and now roaming into internet will facilitate customers who want to travel abroad and still want to continue using their services without having to go through the inconvenience of finding locations to use it. What we did we have been contacting companies outside to alliances and joint ventures with and this is one of the alliances that we form to help us to be able to provide this level of service to our customers.”

“How much will this new service cost the customer?”

The new service? There is no activation fee, the fees will be charged by the roaming location that you are in. Typically, it’s a U.S. $2.81 per hour, from the area where you are calling from, but that’s an average charge. It depends on location and you can see the charges on the web, it identifies per country and the roaming charge there. You will be charged the regular BTL rates for the minutes that you are online, but then you do pay the roaming rates aside from that.”

Presently there are plans to provide an international cellular roaming service in the United States and other countries. As for what many customers believe to be BTL’s exorbitantly high rates for local internet service? A BTL spokesman told News Five that a new plan for lower rates is now being finalised and will be presented to the public shortly.
