Belize Peace Movement Ready to Invoke Injunction to Stay Election Date

Robert Lopez

According to Lopez, the Belize Peace Movement is hoping that the case proceeds forward and is fully ventilated in the courts. He says that when the Prime Minister calls a date for election, the Belize Peace Movement will invoke an injunction to stay the election date.

Robert Lopez, Belize Peace Movement

“If it is done right after the elections we have to live with that in place until the next elections is called. We say no. This thing needs to be done now. It needs to be fixed. We cannot blatantly violated our constitution and so we are saying let’s get this done. If elections are called, it is no secret we do have an injunction and we will certainly invoke that injunction and request a stay on the elections until this exercise is carried out or until our case is fully heard.”

Hipolito Novelo

“Realistically speaking, though, you do not expect the case to be completed before the November elections.”

Robert Lopez

“Well Hipolito you know that the Prime Minister and the constitution allow for a ninety day extension and I believe Mister Esquivel used that ninety days back in 1998. We are hoping that the ruling government will see the importance of this case and accord it as such and let’s get this done.”
