BHS Goes Virtual for the First Global Robotics Competition

Now we hear from Belize High School’s I.T. Director and the team mentor, as well as one of the participants.

“First stands For the Inspiration of Science and Technology. One of the things that we strive here at the Belize High School to accomplish is to keep a heavy integration of STEM education within our curriculum. So, having that base at our high school allows for us to compete at these competitions. I did say it is a robotics competition and students are expected to build a robot and carry on from there and these robotic competitions are geared towards building a robotic machinery that is able to solve a particular problem. There are fourteen grand challenges that FIRST Global has highlighted and every year there is a different challenge.”

“This year we participated in a series of technical and social media challenges. Technical challenges are where we use engineering and robotics like we would in the host countries and solve problems and issues that first global hands to us.   Social media challenges are where we focus on networking and connecting with other people from the countries around the world. We would deal with different issues such as waste management and issues at home in Belize. An example of this is challenge number – project impact – where we implemented a three-two-one system at our school BHS and BES. Three-two-one stands for three bins, two goals and one home. We implemented a paper bin, a plastic bin and a biodegradable bin. Our plan is to sort out this trash to solve the issue of waste management in Belize.”

The competition started on June twenty-seventh and culminated on September twenty-fifth.
