1 dead in Corozal traffic accident

A Sunday afternoon outing has ended in tragedy for 4 students of Libertad Village. The young men were all traveling south in a car on the Northern Highway near the entrance to Corozal town when the vehicle crashed into an oncoming truck. It is not clear exactly what caused the crash, but as the driver of the truck, Douglas Mena, reached a curve in front of the Caribbean Village Resort he ran into the red Jaguar Sedan carrying the students. The impact caused the truck to turn over on its side and the car careened into a ditch. While Mena and his 2 passengers received only minor injuries, the car’s occupants were not so lucky. Christian Canul, who was driving the car at the time of the accident, suffered serious head and body injuries and is in the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Passenger Rubelino Garcia has been hospitalized in Corozal and Jerry Aguilar is recuperating in the Orange Walk Hospital. Unfortunately, 18-year old Ian Kellyman, who was flung from the car, died on the spot. Corozal police say they are still investigating to find out what caused the accident.
