Belize Can Conservative Party; Patrick Menzies for Belmopan

The constituency of Belmopan is getting over crowded; as many as five persons are fielding their name for Belmopan in the upcoming general elections. The incumbent, U.D.P. area rep John Saldivar; P.U.P. standard bearer Oscar Mira; independent candidates, Anna Banner-Guy and Arthur Saldivar have all been on the ground campaigning.  But today, a fifth person announced that he is putting his hat in the ring. Patrick Menzies wants to become a member of parliament representing the Belmopan constituency, under his newly formed Belize Can Consecutive Party.

“I therefore have decided to put my name in the hat although I will share some very important points.  Did you realise that we are a dependent dictatorship. We are not an independent democracy. We are dependent dictatorship and let me prove my point. We have three branches of government: judiciary, legislative and we also have the executive branch. Who selects the judiciary? The prime minister. Who selects the executive? The prime minister. And who selects the legislature? Well the people vote and the party that wins gives us the prime minister who establishes the executive, who runs the legislative and who picks most of the senators in the senate. So we are not a democracy; it is fake. We are a dependent dictatorship. And whenever the prime minister doesn’t like what he gets, he just changes the law. That is mindboggling. Only at the ballot box, only at the ballot box can we change it. We cannot change it in any other way. We’ve tried many other ways. We are forming a new party. We have met with various people—some of them have been in government and some of them are in government—and so all I can say today is that we are creating the Belize Can—because I believe that we can—Conservative Party.
