3 month forecast: rainfall will be normal

Story Picture
If you’re tired of the weatherman saying it’s going to rain but it doesn’t until they say it’s going to be sunny, don’t give up just yet. This week, weather forecasters from all over Central America have been brainstorming to come up with ways to improve their service and as an added bonus, they say they’ve got an extended weather forecast for June, July and August. Belizean meteorologist Carlos Fuller says farmers and the hydro people can expect a normal year, whatever that means.

Carlos Fuller, Chief Meteorologist

“We’re expecting the normal rainy season for Belize, that is in June, the rains begin, increase in July and then we have our usual “mawga” season in August. So if you are used to the normal conditions, everything should go your way.”

“The specific numbers yes, are going to come out, and really it is based on probabilities, the probability of it being slightly above normal rainfall, normal rainfall and below normal. And for Yucatan, including Belize, the numbers we have come up with, 30, 50, and 20. That is a 30% probability above normal, 50% probability normal and 20% probability below normal. So for us, we’re saying go for normal or slightly above normal.”

The weather conference ended on Wednesday. Fuller says he would like to remind all Belizeans that the hurricane season starts June 1st and yes, that does mean you should start getting ready from now.
