Last week we reported on Chinese businessman Jin Zhou Wu who was arraigned on three counts of trafficking in persons. According to police, they have been investigating the story for months. Three women provided testimony that they were working for Wu and he withheld their travel documents. ACP Joseph Myvett of the National Crimes Investigation Branch gives us the details.
ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch
“Sometime in mid-2018, Police received information from three females concerning Mr. Jin Wuh who they were reportedly employed by at the time he was running a bar in Bella vista village in the south. As a result, police carried out an investigation which led to him being arrested and charged for three counts of trafficking in person and three additional counts of trafficking in persons to with compelling persons to prostitute. He has since appeared in court and has been remanded to the Hattieville prison until his next hearing. The victims are not Belizeans. In relation to trafficking in persons, whatever offences they would have or may have committed would be put in abeyance once there is an allegation of trafficking in person. So, it was a long drawn out investigation and if indeed that was the fact, that would have been secondary because it would have been the trafficking in persons offences that would have taken priority in this regard.”
